One of my favorite texts within the Bible is found in Philippians. It is Chapter 2, verses 3-4. The KJV says “3. Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory, but in loneliness of mind, let each esteem others better than themselves. 4. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”
Philippians 2:4 KJV
The Message translation says it this way:
“Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”
Philippians 2:1-4 MSG
The”ask” of Paul, in this text, was one of my greatest personal challenges. Making a concerted effort to make your needs secondary to another’s need is contrary to all of the things we are taught in our natural lives. We are challenged to “win” at all costs, no matter how many people we step over on our way to victory. A life centered in Christ, puts others first. It is not easy, but I have found that as I continue to accept the daily challenge of that Scripture, it gets easier. The struggle is real, but, so is God.
Take care. Do good. Be blessed.
